Smart glasses finally made it into shopping carts this year: 50-dollar white-label units, 2,000-yuan brand-name models, and 4,999-yuan full-color AR kits. A hundred-fold price spread in one category. The question is what the extra money actually buys.
Two data points that explain the market
IDC forecasts 4.915 million smart glasses shipped in China in 2026, up 72.7 percent year over year.
Counterpoint's data adds the twist: about 96 percent of shipped units have no display. The volume is going to "ordinary glasses plus camera plus earbuds," not to the sci-fi product from the launch keynote.
Read together, the conclusion is clear. What exploded is lightweight AI, not AR.
Three price tiers, three different products
Bottom tier, 50 to 200 yuan. White-label units that take photos and play audio. Do not expect AI capability. This is a pair of glasses shaped like Bluetooth earbuds; the appeal is the low cost of trying.
The volume tier sits around 2,000 yuan. Here the features become real: instant capture, meeting notes, AI summaries, voice assistants. Some models add iris authentication, eye tracking and heart-rate sensing, though hands-on reviews consistently land on "novel, details still rough."
The top tier is the science-fiction zone. Full-color binocular display models start at 4,999 yuan with delivery stretching into 2027. Ordering today buys a promise, not inventory.
Why no-display wins volume
Weight, battery, price. Add a display module and weight goes up, battery goes down, cost doubles — while the highest-frequency jobs remain capture, ask and translate.
Consumers voted with their wallets for glasses they can wear out of the house, not glasses that play video.
What buyers actually worry about
Privacy. Will iris or facial data be uploaded automatically? Vendors need to state retention policy in plain language.
Recording indicators. "It looks like you're wearing a surveillance camera" is a real complaint from partners and coworkers. A visible recording light — and whether it can be disabled — decides whether the device is socially usable.
Upgrade anxiety. Six months after buying, a better model appears. That is the cost of a category still iterating quickly.
How to choose
Under 200 yuan: treat it as earbuds with a camera. Do not expect AI.
Around 2,000 yuan: the current value zone. Check three things — transcription accuracy, real-world battery, and export into your note-taking tool.
Around 5,000 yuan: unless you specifically need full-color display for development or content production, wait a generation.
The category grew this year not because AI got dramatically better, but because the product finally went back to being glasses. The next leap will come from weight, battery and privacy engineering, not from a model upgrade.
